2005 Clippers Summer Softball St. Louis Park:

The Clippers moved up to St Louis Park C level this year.  We ended the season just under 500 and tied for 4th place out of 10 teams.  We had a tough 7 game losing streak in mid season that we couldn't rebound from.  Individual accolades go to:

The batting title goes to Neil Kulevsky with 564.

Jupe Hale takes home a slough of awards:  slugging title (941), most runs (23), most hits (36), most singles (22), most home runs (5), most RBIs (29) and was the only player who made all 20 games.

Best on base percentage goes to Matt

Most doubles goes to Kayne Weiler with 8.

Most triples goes to Tom Roth with 6 - he got two in game 19!

9-11, 207 runs for and 254 runs against.  Tied for 4th out of 10 teams.

The weather line is 952-924-2567 #1.

PT Navy: one lefty who went yard to RCF.  3B didn't have much range.  Good arm in LF and CF.  They only had 10 guys.  Older guy hit shallow to LF every time.  Tallest guy hit deep to the left side. Game 1 was tight until the 7th inning.  We batted around in the 7th and padded the lead by 8 runs.  1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th and that was it.  Game 2 was more of the same.  We 10 runned them in the 6th and that was all she wrote.  A nice debut by Bill and Trevor - quality off season pick-ups.

ETA@TT: The big 3B wasn't that great in the field but he could crush the ball to LF/LCF.  He had 3 homers in the 1st game.  White visor #20 played LF and SS and hit deep.  Older 2B #22 hit shallow LF every time.  Tallest guy RF liked to slap it to RF. We had 8 guys to start the match up.  We batted, scored 1 and then hit the field for a 1st inning beating.  9 runs.  We got our 9th and 10th players by the 2nd inning.  We pretty much held with them after that, but that wasn't good enough.  The 10 runned us in the 6th.  The rain was constant.  Game 2 was a little better.  We got an early 5 run lead and they chipped away until the top of the 6th when they tied the game.  Then they pulled ahead by 3 in the top of the 7th.  We tied it in the bottom of the 7th and the ump let us play one more.  They scored 3 and then Kevin hit his third homer in the 8th to tie the game.  Trevor was up with 0 outs.  He also hit a homer.  He ran all the way around the bases - high fives, cheers and fun.  Oh wait - that was our 4th homer!  The 3rd baseman was the first to say it.  The ump looked confused and looked in the direction of our scorebook.  Like that would help.  So we admitted it and kept playing.  Trevor's over the fence hit:  1 out.  Jupe hit a double and Tom knocked him home to win the game.  A win, but not as cool as a walk off homer win.

Bar happenings of course after that.  Oh yeah, the only guy who had dry stuff was Ed.  He brought a Tupperware dry box because he "knew it would rain,"  Nice.

PT Bills Boys:  Pretty good with the sticks, not as good in the field. Jupe:  4 total runs in the 1st speaks for itself.  Obviously better in 2nd game.  Our defense was the best of the year, with many double plays and only a handful of errors in both games combined.  Brian homered in the 1st game and Jupe and Brian homered in the 2nd game.  Brian's was very deep.  Jupe's scraped the fence on the way out.  Subdued bar action afterwards, unless the Big Buck Hunter/Golden Tee games got wild after I left.

Silver Bullets:   We didn't score a run in the second game.  We sent 27 batters to the plate and only got 6 hits.  Ouch!  Goes down in the books as the Clipper's worst hitting performance of all time.

Icemen: top team in the league.  Mostly hit to the left side.  One switch hitter who hits deep both ways.  #1 LC has good arm.  Big catcher with red had is slow and hits to RF. Despite Kayne and Trevor hitting a combined 8 for 12 on the night and Brian and Jupe each hitting dinger, we could not take home a win against one of the top teams in the league.

Sandwich: SS a little wild on the relays, #14 3B looks like Ole and hits deep to LF, pitcher likes to quick pitch, #9 hits deep to LF. The silver lining on this night was Joe's nice hitting in the first game.  He went 3 for 4 with a dinger.  The score tells the story of the 2nd game.

Short Bus: young team, only one guy can hit deep, the rest hit singles, all right handed, all hit to the left side, ss has a good arm Lost first game 4-8.  Couldn't hit the ball very well.  They got on the walk wagon in the 1st inning.  Played pretty good defense though and most of their runs were earned.  We were able to get a 6 run inning in the second game and we led the entire time.  We adjusted in the 2nd game to play 5 infielders since they were not hitting deep on us, the grass was thick so the gappers weren't getting to the fence.  That worked a little better and we pulled out of our slump with a nice 11-5 win.  They still all hit to the left side with the occasional weak attempt at an opposite field hit.

Outs: Joe, Jay Bunny's: pretty young team that didn't have much power.  Most everything was hit to the infield or the shallow outfield.  Their pitcher struggled to find a groove. This was a fun night of softball.  We were hitting the ball much harder than our previous few nights.  But our defense really stepped up and made some big plays.  We hit 488 on the night and Bunny's gave us 8 on-errors on the night.  Our first double win since the season opener.

Outs: Ed, Trevor PT Navy: 1 lefty who hits deep to both sides.  3B didn't have much range.  Good arm in LF and CF.  2 older guys hit shallow.  Tallest guy RC hits deep to LF.  Bigger pitcher likes to pitch flat "curve" balls, slow in the field an on the bases, hits to RF.  Tall lanky guy hits shallow RF.  1 smaller guy stands behind the plate and hits to the LF line. They started out with a huge 1st inning - all legitimate hits and they scored 8.  We never came back.  The second game saw better hitting from the Clippers.  We hit 564 as a team and played solid defense.  It was a good way to end the night.  We started to figure out their hitting patters and that helped.  We had a big 7 run 5th inning.

Outs: Klubber, Kayne G.B.er's: #9 smaller guy hits deep, biggest guy hits homers, 2 lefties without much power. The first game was a classic example of how to hit well in the first inning and then coast to a win, but make it close for the fans.  The second game was poor hitting.  We only hit 304 as a team.  We almost made it to 500 on the season, but we'll have to settle for 9-11 as a final record.
