Softball Results 2003

The Sheep finished the season by beating long-time nemesis and last year's undefeated champions PT Evergreen by one run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the rain came down. The Sheep were ahead 15-11 but PT Evergreen had loaded the bases with 2 outs and their star player was up to bat. He put one to the left field fence but we were able to hold him at third and get the next batter out to win the game.

The Sheep started out 2-2 with a loss to PT Evergreen and PT Hot Horn Dogs early in the season. The win on July 1st over the Sluggers, who were leading the league at the time, was a huge victory for the Sheep and we went on to beat them again on July 17th. The final record was 10-2, our best since joining the league in 2000.

5/8	Aquila 3	BP at 6:30 Game at 7:15	Team Nelson	W 6-5	Full team.	This was a close one - down to the wire at the bottom of 7. We had trouble at the plate with only 12 hits on the night. They had one woman who burned our outfield. They switched to a man pitcher half way through the game. They played a rover almost the whole game. They had a weak RF and catcher. They played decent defense and only committed 3 errors.
5/15	Aquila 1	BP at 8:30 Game at 9:25	at Swingers	W 20-13	Rich, Tracy, Cari Jo out. Cari for Jessi.	We gave up 7 runs in the top of the first - but they were all earned. After that, they didn't hit as well and we were able to score every inning but one. We didn't have any errors in the field and they had 4. Their biggest guy hit lots of pop ups to left field and he got one over the fence. They had one woman who hit the ball hard to left field, but most of the others hit up the middle and to left. They had a weak right side of the outfield. They walked 3 times - always women. They liked to risk it on the bases and got picked at 3rd once.

5/29	Aquila 5	6:00	at PT Hot Horn Dogs	L 13-15	Tracy out. Deb for Karleen.	The Sheep were in this one the whole time. Both teams made a handful of errors and the Sheep gave up 6 runs in the 4th inning due to some poor defense. Their women hit to the left side (#9, #24, #26) and none of their men went deep. They were sloppy on the bases. In the end, it was our unproductive bats, particularly in the 4th and 5th innings that killed us.
6/5	Aquila 3	9:25	PT Evergreen	L 16-25	Cari Jo out. Claude for Tracy and Brian for Rich.	One of the worst defensive outings by the Sheep in team history. We were having a hard time. They hit well and got a lot of singles, but our defensive errors gave them additional bases and runs. They only had 2 errors, but had some weak plays in RF and RC. Their smallest guy hit singles up the middle every time. Their tall 2B woman took one strike at every at bat. We had a good 5th inning with 9 runs, but it wasn't enough.
6/12	Aquila 5	7:15	Dilligaf	W 14-3	Jupe out.	Dilligaf's pitcher was struggling and gave up 7 walks - 6 of which ended up being runs. It could have been worse if we didn't swing at some of the balls. The Sheep turned around the defense and played nearly error-free. Many of the Dilligaf men tried to go to RF/RC but they were denied.
6/19	Aquila 3	7:15	at Bunny's	W 21-11	Cari Jo out. Claude for Kelly.	The Sheep hit the ball great and had 21 hits in 6 innings. That is the most hits in a game for the Sheep this year. #21 and #11 women for Bunny's hit the ball deep to LF and their SS #7 hit deep to center. Most of the other guys hit to RF. Their pitcher had trouble finding the plate and gave us 7 walks.
6/26	Dakota East	7:15	Team Nelson	W 21-5	Cari Jo and Kelly out, Claude for Tracy, Diana for Jessi.	Team Nelson had a tough time in this game. They struggled at the plate and in the field. The Sheep batted 615 as a team, our highest batting average in a game this year and the first time we batted over 600 as a team.
TUE 7/1	Dakota East	6:10	Sluggers (makeup game)	W 8-7	Matt, Brian, Rich, Al, Dave, Klubber, Scott, Jessi, Claude, Tracy, Jodi, Mary.	We won in the bottom of the 7th with Al's 2-run homer. We got out in front early and they lost their energy. They scored 3 in the top of 7 to take the lead for the first time. #10 guy is their big hitter - to the fence on both sides. #13 and #7 women hit well to left field. #16 lefty woman hits to SS. #12 hits to 2B and up the middle. #8 guy has a really easy swing. Their LF is very quick and likes to throw people out at 3B if he can. Pitcher throws flat meat pitches.

7/10	Aquila 3	8:20	at Swingers	W 18-7	Karleen, Kelly, Mary, Rich, Scott out. Need 2 men and 2 women.	They hit the ball, but we hit better. We sent 50 people to the plate in 6 innings. They had a weak RF and their relays throws were not good. Their first pitcher lefty hit to the fence in RC and likes to quick pitch. Their tallest woman hits well to LF.
7/17	Aquila 2	6:10	Sluggers	W 17-9	Full team.	We dropped a few balls in the outfield, but then they also dropped a couple and threw away 3 balls at 1B. We hit great and scored 17 runs in 6 innings, 13 of those came with 2 outs. #12 woman hits up the middle and burned us deep to RC once. # 7 woman hits it well to the left side every time. #10 guy hits it deep but didn't hit it out. They hit a lot of fly balls to the outfield.
7/24	Aquila 1	9:25	at PT Hot Horn Dogs	W 25-14	Tracy out, Al for Rich.	Both teams made a lot of errors in the first two innings. The difference was that we stopped making errors and made adjustments and they didn't. They had a few guys who liked to hit to the right side (stormy) and with the strong wind blowing to right, there was a lot of action over there, for both teams. #24 and #13 women both hit hard to 3B. They had a weak player in RF who they moved to 3B and then C.
7/31	Aquila 1	6:10	at PT Evergreen	W 15-14	Karleen out.	We had these guys scouted pretty well. Their biggest guy hits singles to the right side, their smallest guy hits singles up the middle, their captain 3B places the ball and likes to hit singles up the middle, their best player LF hits deep wherever he wants, bleach hair guy pops up fowl balls to the 3B side and all their women hit to the left side. Both teams made a couple errors, but we had the big early innings and weathered the storm in the bottom of the 6th to clinch the one-run win.

Sheep Plays of the Week

July 31:

Lilly at Park Tavern for swapping a pitcher of light for a pitcher of Killian's Red even up!!

July 24:

Kelly for her nice slide into second. She was safe and then proceeded to run to third in the same play.

July 17:

Play of the game goes to 6 people. Cari Jo, Tracy and Jodi for all getting on base in the 6th inning, Matt and Jupe for getting out of the way to allow the women to load the bases and Dave for cleaning up with a grand slam to the opposite side.

July 9:

Tracy with a great night at the plate. She had 3 RBI and two clutch hits, one of which was a beauty line drive into left field. She had the most team spirit too!

July 1:

Al took it to the bank with a game winning, two-run homer in the bottom of the 7th inning. He placed it perfectly on the line and it went all the way to the fence. The bench was heard yelling "Let's Go!" as Al rounded third.

June 26:

Scott and Karleen for batting a combined 7 for 7 with 6 RBI. How's that for a D&T showing?

June 19:

Chaffee comes up with a huge over the shoulder catch in the last inning as he was running back for a deep ball in left field.

June 12:

Jessi with a great sprinting catch in shallow right field. This was one of their better hitters so Jessi was playing him deep. She needed wheels to get to this one!

June 5:

Brian the super sub for stepping in and batting 1000 on the night with a triple, a home run and 4 RBIs.

May 29:

Dave for a great night at 3B. No errors, he played solid and turned the team's only double play by getting the runner at third and then the out at first.

May 15:

Jupe for his head first slide into home - ON TOP OF THE BAT THAT WAS STILL LYING THERE! He was safe by the way.

May 8:

Karleen for an excellent night on the mound, keeping the other team from getting any walks and getting at least 5 assists on the night.
